News: 26th January 2011.

Spanish mobile operator 02 in the UK is to launch free wifi, available to pubs from April. This service is free to customers, and online reports suggest it may be paid for by landlords and other business taking up the offers available. Yes its good to give the customers something, but lets be fair, wifi has been in many pubs now for a few years, can you as landlords really think of ANY pub you have visited or seen actually having more than a handful of customers using laptops/internet gadgets? As a landlord can you justify the price of this extra novelty for what would be a handful of customers a week? You can provide the same free wifi from your own equipment - some of the current worry is pubs being hit for 1000's when customers download illegal content. Simply having your router configured correctly can in many cases BLOCK all filesharing. If your making enough money you can afford to pay more we wish you luck, but if like most your struggling its easier to buy a set of free wifi window stickers and set up the router to block the problem.

New Government ban on below cost sales of alcohol too little too late for many public houses.
In a move designed to stop outlets selling below cost (duty+VAT) the government have not really done anything to change the effect these cheap sales have on landlords or public disorder as many 'preload' on nights out. Our view would be to change the license laws completely, for pubs and clubs to be the only places to buy alcohol of any type for consumption on/off premises, this would effectively take the alcohol out of the hands of teenagers, reduce crime and other anti-social behaviour. Supermarkets and shops can sell many items to stay in business a ban on sales of alcohol would not be detrimental to there overall business, pubs have 2 lines alcohol and food. By changing the law, it would effectively ensure the survival of over 40,000 establishments employing over 120,000 people. A change like this would have been better.
